Air Pollution
Particulate Analysis

Lesson Six

LESSON PLAN

Name:  Lauren Peters

Subject: Science

Topic: Air Pollution  -- Is it in Roebuck?  Particulate Analysis

Time: 45 minutes

Learning Objectives

  • The learner will demonstrate analysis of results by questioning other members of his or her team.
  • The learner will demonstrate synthesis of results by compiling all data from each member of the group.

State Standards

7.III.4.a.  Infer how air pollution affects people and the environment.

Materials List

q       Microscopes (one per group)

q       Rubric for grading presentations (one per student)

q       Chart paper

q       Markers

q       String

q       Glue

q       Scissors

q       Tissue paper, etc.

Method

Introduction

Particulate revelation!  Get students into groups before they reveal the results of their particulate analysis to each other.  Allow students time to discuss the predictions set for their areas of study and the reasoning prior to the experiment.  Ask students to reveal their results to each other and examine their group findings under a microscope.  Have the groups discuss their findings and the possible reasons for their findings.  Which of their original predictions were correct?  Were their original reasonings correct?

Instruction

Part 1: Tell the students that today is a workshop day, devoted entirely to preparing the groups for their upcoming presentations.  First things first, distribute the rubric for grading each presentation and discuss it with the class, clearly outlining each point.

Part 2: Set the students loose to plan their presentations.  Circulate the room making sure students are on-task, delegating, following instructions, and paying attention to the rubric.  This workshop will give you time to visit with every group of students and hear about their individual results for the particulate experiment.

Conclusion

Remind students of when the presentations will be (allow several days for out-of-class work), and have students write the date in their planners.  Check planners as the students leave.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Informal Assessment -- Observation
    • Did the student participate in group and class discussions?
  • Formal Assessment  -- Classwork Grade.  Each student should
    • Write the presentation date in his or her planner.  Worth: 5 points.
    • Participate in workshop (see attached rubric labeled workshop day).  Worth: 28 points.
