Air Pollution
What is Being Done?

Lesson Eight

LESSON PLAN

Name:  Lauren Peters

Subject: Science

Topic: Air Pollution -- What is being done about it?

Time: 45 minutes, or a full day

Learning Objectives

  • The learner will demonstrate application of classroom behavior rules by constructing a respectful persona.
  • The learner will demonstrate evaluation of the experience by deciding which aspects of the lesson interested him or her the most and expanding upon them.

State Standards

7.III.4.c.  Analyze ways air pollution can be reduced.

Materials List

q       Copy of the Clean Air Act for every student to review before activity

Method

Introduction

Given our recent company development  Remind students about behavior expectations (attentive listening, appropriate questions, respect, etc.) and about our recent work on pollutant reducers (wet scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators).  Remind students that they labeled BMW and Michelin as some of Roebucks main sources of pollution.

Instruction

Option 1: Introduce the speaker, a representative from BMW, Michelin, or Duke Power.  The speaker will be asked to talk to the students about the corporations commitment to the clean air act and their corporate efforts to reduce the pollution produced.  Make sure speaker is aware that students have studied wet scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators.

Option 2: Plan a field trip to the BMW or Michelin headquarters, coordinating with other team teachers and integrating all subjects into the days learning.  Science would focus again on the corporations commitment to, and efforts to uphold, the clean air act.

Conclusion

Ask each child to complete a journal entry for homework, entitled If I worked at (fill in the name of the company presented in lesson)  Ask the students to discuss two or more aspects of the days lesson.  For example, If I worked at BMW, I would want to work in the education department because I think it would be cool to travel around and tell kids about the ways we reduce pollution.  Journal entry will be graded on thoughtfulness.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Formal Assessment
    • Homework grade taken from Behavior Rubric (see attached).  Worth: 100 points.
    • Classwork grade from Journal completion.  Worth: 10 points.
